Special Edition: An APPX Birthday Celebration

Today, January 16, marks the tenth anniversary of the purchase of APPX Software, Inc. by the current ownership group. In recognition, we’d like to look back at some of the highlights of the past decade.

1998

APPX Software, Inc. is purchased from Tredegar Industries by four APPX resellers: Steve Frizzell from C-Side Systems, Neal Farmer from Management Data, and Mike Wilke and Bob Thornton from Wilke-Thornton. The office in Richmond is closed, and corporate headquarters are moved to Jacksonville, Florida.

International distributor Caylx Software holds an APPX conference in Panama. APPX R&D Director Korry Douglas is the keynote speaker.

1999

In January, APPX Release 3.5 comes out, the last of Version 3.

In March, APPX international distributor Caylx Software holds an APPX conference in Amsterdam. Several APPX staff members made the trip, including company president Steve Frizzell, who spent time with the European resellers and customers and described the company’s plans for the future.

In May, APPX 4.0 makes its debut, with some major enhancements, including new GUI features, Language Translation tools, improved SCAN functionality, and more.

In June, APPX participates as an exhibitor at the Florida Association of Counties Conference in Orlando, an annual event that has included APPX almost every year since.

In October, the first APPX Conference is held in Jacksonville. Resellers and customers from around the world come together to celebrate new leadership, new products, and new opportunities.

2000

Release 4.1 greatly expands the graphical capabilities of APPX, to allow design of dynamic input and menu processes. Pictures, buttons, icons, varying fonts, lines and boxes, and more are now integrated into the APPX design environment.

Steve Frizzell represents APPX at the FIMMAS Users Group meeting on the Caribbean island of Tobago, in what has become an annual appearance at a variety of locales.

Cansys West International becomes the second APPX international distributor, building a network of resellers in Europe, Latin America, Africa, Australia, and the Middle East.

2001

APPX introduces our Linux Promotion, offering a single-user APPX/Linux license, with design right, at no charge. Since its introduction, the promotion has attracted users from 86 countries.

For the first time, APPX appears as an exhibitor at a Linux World Expo and Conference. The event in San Francisco begins a run of APPX participation in ten consecutive Linux Worlds, in San Francisco, New York, and Boston.

APPX also is an exhibitor at Oracle Open World in San Francisco,  and at the International Oracle Users Group Convention in Orlando.

2002

APPX resellers and customers come together for another APPX Conference in downtown Jacksonville. A dinner cruise on the St. Johns River highlighted the social aspects, while numerous informative and interesting sessions made it all worthwhile.

2003

Release 4.2 extends graphical capabilities to APPX output processes, and for the first time generates pdf files from reports.

2004

This year’s APPX Conference, themed “Sun, Sand, and Software,” is held at the beautiful Marriott Sawgrass Hotel in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. A true first class location and first class event, participants enjoyed every minute, and looked forward to the next one.

The release of APPX Financials 5.0 incorporates many updates to the basic business applications that have been the core of our business for more than two decades. The new release takes advantage of APPX’s graphical capabilities, and serves as a model for APPX application designers everywhere.

2005

APPX Software introduces appx BANG!(Business Applications, Next Generation), our fully integrated suite of general business and distribution applications, available under open source licensing, which allows users and developers to obtain, modify, run, and redistribute the software at no charge.

A new promotion is unveiled, offering multi-user Linux licenses with no license fee for customers who purchase annual maintenance at the silver level or above.

CWI hosts an APPX conference in Panama, the first such event in Latin America since 1998. Al Kalter represents APPX Software there.

2006

“The best APPX conference ever” is how many describe “APPX EX-ZOOBERATION 2006.” The sessions focus on current APPX features and plans for the future, but the trolley trip to the Jacksonville Zoo and the evening celebration there are what everyone will remember. After all, how many of us had ever fed a giraffe before?

APPX goes on the road as well, continuing our annual presence at the Florida Association of Counties Conference, and exhibiting for the first time at the Southeastern Accounting Show in Atlanta.

This year also marks the debut of APPX Spotlight, our newsletter which is distributed to several hundred APPX customers, resellers, and enthusiasts around the world.

2007

The company marks the 25th anniversary of our original rapid application development product, Speed II, and simultaneously announces that product’s retirement.

CWI, the international APPX distributor, holds a conference in Amsterdam, at which APPX President Steve Frizzell was a keynote speaker.

2008

APPX extends the single-user license promotion to all platforms. Single-user promotional APPX licenses, with design rights, are now available at no charge for Unix, Windows, and Linux

With a decade of success behind us, we look forward to the much anticipated release of APPX 4.3, with important new features and capabilities, and to working with our resellers, customers, and friends for many years to come.
